in BRAZIL 2010 – Weddings

Yeah! the second half of 2010 was filled with this amazing gigs in Brazil, that kinda nights only Brazil can provide!!

Few weddings of amazing people, and a couple of amazing neverending parties for the good and old ESPM crowd! OMG those people know how to party till the morning sun!! I’ll post some pictures below, some pictures from these parties for you to check out what’s going on at that warm part of the Globe! First the weddings.. will avoid the names of the couples to respect their privacy on those private (for hundreds) nights. Two of them in Bahia, in Arraial d’Ajuda and Trancoso northeast of Brazil. Two little pieces of paradise, were amazing parties meters from the most beautiful beaches you could probably get to know.

Alguns casamentos de gente maravilhosa, e duas festas intermináveis pra jovem, velha ESPM. A galera sabe como se acabar até de manhã. Vou postar umas fotos abaixo prá mostrar pro mundo a categoria das baladas tropicais..Primeiro, os casamentos. Eu não vou mencionar o nome dos casais prá preservar suas identidadesDois deles na Bahia, em Arraial d’Ajuda e Trancoso. Dois pequenos paraísos, Duas festas há metros de praias entre as mais belas do mundo.

ARRAIAL D’AJUDA
One of them in Arraial by the pool area in a beautiful hotel, closed for the event, a real heavenly site, with absurd landscape. as hot as 30 degrees overnight. The dad of the groom, former Dj from the 70′s, opened the dancefloor spinning some original stuff  with a couple of reel-tape players. Brilliant music, beautifully played that triggered the party at around 7pm, to just finish something about 8am, more than 12 hours later! Everything absolutely well organized by the groom himself and his team, that happens to be no less than the top party planner in that part of Brazil, that moved there after years organizing all kinds of top-parties in São Paulo, Rio, London, Barcelona and Paris. What a night it was!

<pt> Em Arraial, na beira da piscina de um hotel, fechado pro evento, uma noite no paraíso, com uma vista absurda. O pai do noivo, que foi Dj nos anos 70(aparentemente , um bom dj!), abriu a pista de dança tocando uns originais em gravador de rolo. Lindo som, maravilhosamente tocado, abriu a pista com força as 7 da noite, pista que contou com outros DJs alêm de mim e não parou até 8 da matina, eu acho… mais de 12 horas depois, parece…. Tudo organizado com excelência pelo próprio noivo, que por acaso é o maior organizador de eventos daquela parte do Brasil, que se mudou pra lá após anos organizando grandes festas principalmente em São Paulo, mas também em muitos outros lugares do Brasil, ou em Londres, em Paris, em Barcelona… Que noite animal !!!

TRANCOSO

The other one, in Trancoso, at hotel owned by the bride’s family, at the top location of the village – Quadrado – central area of the wonderful and cute little town that’s Trancoso. Meters away from the beach – semi-desertic and white as the road covered with snow I spot from my window right now but something about 30 Celsius warmer – and from a sixteenth century Catholic Church, dedicated to Saint John, the Baptiste where the religious ceremony had happened. The couple and most of the guests came from Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, and absolutely made worth the 600 miles trip. Alongside mr. DJ Alan Kin we played till dawn and the party seemed to last forever, once it also started 5pm. God bless Brazilians energy! Amazing stuff

<pt> O  casório em Trancoso ocorreu em um hotel, de propriedade da família da noiva, no Quadrado – principal localidade do vilarejo, metros da maravilhosa praia de areia branca como a neve que vejo da minha janela agora, semi desértica como a rua que vejo da janela agora, mas tudo 30 graus mais quente…. Onde fica a Igreja de São João Batista, construida no século 16. Onde ocorreu a cerimônia. O casal e boa parte dos convidados vieram de Brasília com disposição prá fazer a viagem valer! Ao lado do DJ Alan Kin, que veio de São Paulo prá me auxiliar nesta deliciosa missão, tocamos até o amanhecer e a festa parecia que ia durar prá sempre, já que tinha começado as 5 da tarde! Deus abençoe esta energia toda! Muito bom!!

SAMPA – SP

One in São Paulo city, in the oldest building of the 3rd biggest city in the world, a church that marks the site where the city was founded, in 1554, “Pátio do Colégio”. Absolutely historical building, absolutely and faithfully preserved by the city all over the years. With the ceremony in the church that still lies in the place, and the party in the ‘backyard’, where an amazing structure was put together to host the lucky guests till the early hours.

ITAPIRA – SP

And another in Itapira (São Paulo’s country side) in an amazing property that belongs to the couple’s family. The point there was to keep the party as fun and late as possible, goal absolutely reached!  With the precious help of the groom and bride it couldn’t be different. Their amazingly contagious energy got well spread around the guest that had the pleasure the amazing panoramic view of the sunset rising at 6am from the dance-floor. Unforgettable moment.

E ainda outro casamento em Itapira, numa linda chácara, propriedade da família dos noivos. A idéia ali era segurar a festa e a diversão até quando fosse possível e,  missão passada, missão cumprida!  Com a indispensável colaboração dos noivos, ficou bem mais fácil, devo admitir! A energia do casal contagiou a festa inteira  e boa parte dos convidados teve o prazer de presenciar o sol nascendo da pista. Espetacular

Despite the 10-hours flight distance between my door and the absolutely fantastic events, that was a real honor to be part of all of them, and I’ll ike to thank you all who believed in me to be in charge of the music in their special days. and really hope you all had an amazing time, as I did! Apesar das 10 horas de voo da minha casa até estas festas fora-de-série,  foi uma enorme honra particpar de todos eles, e eu queria aproveitar este espaço prá agredecer todos que confiaram em mim pra fornecer a música em seus grandes dias! E espero que tenho se divertido, pois eu me diverti… erm… um pouco menos formal…. prá caralho!!! E obrigado Laura Ryan, pelas lindas fotos na Bahia (4 primeiras do post)

REVIEW –

The show was absolutely brilliant, every single thing we tried on studio really happened on stage, the weather helped (a lot, considering we’re in London), and we were all really happy with the final result. The crowd reaction was also better than excepected, as these people were mainly there to watch two of the most popular (pop) brazilian music styles, in shows after ours “pagode” and “sertanejo”, rather than a sophisticated Blues-Bossa, or Acid Jazz, and we blew from the speakers of the wonderful sound sysytem. The experience was fanctastic and I really hope we get to work together again. Thanks again Carlinhos e Viana. All the best! Watch the show here:

“Groove n’ Bossa blends the best of Brazil with modern electronic beats” -

Wow, what a cliche it sounds doesn’t it.. awful quote to begin a post.. but I’ll let it here as these guys made it differently.
The group is led by Marcos Vianna, talented guitarist and producer with an early background in rock and other progressive musical styles. He is teamed up with Carlos Coppos, experienced bassist that brings the perfect weight to their acid samba, soulful beats nicely produced at their studio in Itaipava – Rio de Janeiro. In their words – “music made with no rush”

They perform live on stage, with percussion, vocals and dj samples with unbelievable energy and technical quality, either some brilliant versions of the finest bossa-nova’s eternal hits, either their own tracks. Then came the Brazilian Day, massive Brazilian festival in London, sponsored by Globo TV, more than 30.000 expected (last year’s attendance). In 2010 host at world class O2 Arena, July 31st, the festival is bringing massive names of Brazilian music in all styles, from country (sertaneja) superstars Cesar Menotti e Fabiano, to pure samba old school masters Fundo de Quintal.
Among then, bringing a spice of class to the main stage at 3:30pm, Groove n’ Bossa, who invited me to join them on stage, to spin the beats,  add some samples and energy to their fantastic show. I, flattered, accepted, and after two rehearsals I’m absolutely sure that this gonna be an unforgettable experience.

Nossa, que clichezão pobre prá começar um post não? Mas vou deixar aqui porque estes caras fizeram o clichê diferente.

O grupo é liderado por Marcos Vianna, um guitarrista talentoso e produtor de mão cheia com grande experiência em rock e outros estilos. Ele toca com Carlos Coppos, baixista experiente que apóia perfeitamente os beats produzidos no estudio da dupla em Itaipava-RJ. Nas palavras dos mesmos “musica feita sem pressa”.

E eis que veio o Brazilian Day, festival brasileiro gigantesco em Londres, patrocinado pela Globo, apresentado pelo Serginho Groissman, que no passado reuniu mais de 30.000 pessoas, e este ano vem ainda maior, no mundialmente conhecido O2 Arena. O festival está trazendo grandes nomes para todos os gostos, como César Menotti e Fabiano e Fundo de Quintal(na versão do post em inglês eu explico quem são, mas prá bom brasileiro, em português dispensam apresentação). Entre eles, trazendo um toque de classe ao palco principal as 3:30 da tarde, vem o Groove n’ Bossa, e eu fui convidado para ser o DJ da banda neste mega show em Londres. Bom, sábado a tarde, não ia estar fazendo nada… aceitei. E agora na véespera, depois de dois ensaios incríveis, tenho certeza de que será uma experiência inesquecível (já que comecei com clichê, assim termino.. HA)

This is the set I’ve recorded to Guanabara, October/09, to celebrate our 5th Birthday (“our” as I’ve been there since the first year).

A CD with the set recorded have been given as a gift to all 800 guests on our 5 years party, when I’ve had the pleasure to share my set time with no less than Mr. Gilles Peterson.

The objective of this set is to bring together the different styles of Brazilian music you can hear at Guanabara in any of the 7 nights a week we’re opened, either from one of our DJs, or from our hand-picked bands.

This set is also the first gem of an eventual Guanabara CD, to be produced in the future, so your feedback is absolutely welcomed.

5 Happy years have flown by, 1800 days of Non-Stop music and dance, and 2,5 million caipirinhas muddled. Our aim was to bring the best of Brazil to London. Our line-ups have featured the best Brazilian artists both flown in or residents here. Highlights have been Ivete Sangalo, Daniela Mercury, Tribo de Jah, O Rappa, Mutantes, Monobloco, Mart’Nalia, and O Rappa. We are proud that our supported us so loyally over the past 5 years, Guanabara’s continuous growth has been due to the Brazilian community and our English costumers believing that doom and gloom shall not prevail, but dance, song and caipirinhas shall triumph!

For our fifth birthday we want to give you a present. For the first time in our 5 years of history we have compiled our own CD, mixed by our grand resident, DJ Limão.

We have had some great times over the last 5 years, and hope to continue porviding you with somewhere to dance and party for the next 5 years.

  One of these nights, last year’s October, I was attending my monthly 1st Saturday residence at Bairro North, then came Ferdie, the energetic owner (and local top party-goer), telling me about a contest that the bar was to host – Corona Movida.

 He told me that was a Worldwide house music Djs contest, that aims to find out fresh talents and offers, among the prizes opportunity to play in the top clubs of the world, and produce a single with their resources. ’09 was the 9th edition and it happened along thirteen countries – Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and UK(England, Scotland and Wales)

 The contest starts locally, with heats in different parts of the involved cities, then local finals, regional finals, national finals and world finals. 

 That sounded really nice for me when he invited me to represent the bar in the contest – “to check out how I’d go…” “that’s just a half-hour set,  you came here and basically play what you usually play on the bar and I’m sure you gonna be fine…”

          

On the Tuesday night of the first leg of the contest I were impressed to see the bar crowded as early as 9pm for the event. Corona’s promo team worked hard, it seemed. My set was based in a rather easy listening house music, as I know the bar quite well, and specially on a Tuesday night, that crowd couldn’t be up to more hardcore beats. It worked, and I’ve passed thru the first stage, among 8 other runners.

 

 Then it came the North London finals, as well at Barrio North, this time with 4 other contenders. I’ve bet all my coins on the same formula of the week before, and despite the level of the opponents was clearly higher than the 1st leg, I’ve been thru again, heading to the London Finals:

  

Corona crew offered to the contenders a dinner on a boat cruise on the Thames, before heading to Ministry of Sound, at Elephant & Castle. A really pleasant evening. 

 

Ministry got absolutely packed in that Tuesday night, as it is usually one of the busiest nights in the week, and plus all the crowd that came over from all the country for the finals. I wasn’t that lucky on the drawing and played in second, rather early at 11-30. But the club was already busy and the dance-floor had an absolutely brilliant reaction during my set – very similar to the one I played at The Den.

At the end, all sets were nice and well executed, some of them filling the room better then others, but everything definitely quality. I had no clue who would win, but was confident that my really good crowd reaction could make the difference again. 

 But it didn’t, and Will-E, contender from Leeds, wild-card holder, has won the UK National finals.

  

 And represented UK in the world finals, won by Spanish DJ Milutxo.

 

 The contest is absolutely well organized, and indeed offers opportunity to talents to arise. Despite the level of the finals is no less than professional I highly recommend the contest to DJs of all ages and experience. 

 

 My experience was absolutely incredible as I had never run a contest before, nevermind a that big and worldwide. It’s a completely different feeling to play as a contender, that differs from any other gig I’ve made in my already long road. Maybe a bit stressful, but really worth it. 

 

To win the London finals were absolutely fantastic and above my expectations. 

 

And at the National finals, I knew would be hard job for me – as a Brazilian – to represent UK in a worldwide DJs contest finals …

Uma noite dessas estava tocando na minha noite mensal no Barrio North – badaladissimo bar em Angel, Norte de Londres – quando o dono, figura chamado Ferdie, baladeiro de plantao, comecou a me falar de um concurso de DJs que o bar iria hospedar, o Corona Movida.

 

Dizia ele que era um concurso mundial de DJs de House que busca revelar novos talentos e oferece como premio a oportunidade para atuar em grande clubs do mundo. Que aquela (out./09) era a nona edicao e rolava simultuaneamente em treze paises – Dinamaraca, Franca, Alemanha, Grecia, Irlanda, Italia, Latvia, Lituania, Noruega, Portugal, Espanha, Suecia e Reino Unido (englobando Inglaterra, Escocia e Irlanda do Norte).

 

E assim, de conversa mole, ele me convidou para participar do concurso representando o bar. “Eh so vim aqui e tocar meia horinha” – dizia ele. Topei, ne? Fazer o que…

 

O concurso comeca local, com eliminatorias em diferentes zonas das cidade envolvidas, ate finais locais, finais municipais, nacionais e mundial.

O set era de meia hora, e eu optei por tocar, nesta primeira triagem, coisas mais acessiveis, pois conhecia o publico do bar e sei que nao se tratava de um publico especializado em musica eletronica, e a reacao do publico eh o primeiro criterio de julgamento do concurso. Deu super certo e passei por 8 concorrentes rumo a final de North London, tambem no mesmo bar.

 

Na final de North London o nivel dos concorrentes cresceu muito, mas a formuleta da semi-final vingou de novo e passei por mais 5 concorrentes.

 

Entao fui a final municipal, da cidade que tinha mais inscritos no concurso, Londres. A final rolou na The Den (novo nome do The End, club top 10 do mundo pela lista da DJ MAG). Foram concorrer comigo os campeoes de South, East and West London. Comecei com muita sorte no sorteio, pois fui escolhido para tocar por ultimo, com mais pessoas no club. Porem apos sets de alta qualidade do primeiro e segundo candidato, o terceiro tocou um deep house muito pesado para o publico que debandou da pista, e comecei meu set com a pista vazia. Na meia hora que toquei a pista encheu e esquentou de vez, e assim a entreguei para o Top-DJ convidado CJ Machintosh, que tocaria durante a apuracao. Uma hora depois saiu o resultado e descobri que venci a perna de Londres cheguei na final nacional.

 

 A final nacional aconteceu na Ministry of Sound (outro club top10) e dela participaram  5 candidatos – os vencedores de Leeds, Brighton, Midlands e Londres, adicionados ao vencedor de um chamado Wild Card, que daria acesso a um determinado concorrente a final nacional, mesmo que nao ganhasse a regional. O concorrente que veio pelo Wild Card veio tambem de Leeds, alem daquele que ganhou a eliminatoria. A organizacao ofereceu aos concorrentes, alem de transporte e estadia em Londres, um jantar em um barco pelo Rio Tamisa, com a presenca do Staff da Corona. Tudo foi muito bem organizado, uma noite realmente agradavel. As 10 da noite chegamos a Ministry, onde tocariamos meia hora cada, das 11 a 1 e meia e eu fui sorteado para ser o segundo dos cinco a tocar. Todos tinham um nivel bem alto, e o meu set sinceramente empolgou muito a pista de danca, mesmo mais cedo do que eu gostaria de estar tocando – as 11 e meia. A Ministry lotou na noite de terca feira e o que chamo de mais vazia eram umas 400, 500 pessoas ali.. Todos os candidatos tinham um nivel altissimo e ao fim dos sets eu nao tinha ideia de quem ganharia, mas confiava na minha excelente reacao de publico, como havia confiado outrora.

Mas desta vez nao deu..  O candidato escolhido para representar a Inglaterra na final mundial foi o DJ Will E, o candidato de Leeds, portador do tal wild-card. A final mundial foi vencida pelo espanhol DJ Milutxo

  

O concurso eh ate que bem organizado, apesar de meu nome ter sido publicado errado algumas vezes, inclusive no cartaz principal da final nacional, apos minha reclamacao (chamaram Limao de Lemao). 

 

A experiencia foi de qualquer forma incrivel, e, alem de sido uma experiencia fantastica, ate ganhei premios por faturar Londres ( 200 libras, uma bicicleta da Corona – mais colorida do que bonita,que ja foi vendida na caixa, e 6 caixas de 24 Coronas, que abasteceram minha dispensa por algum tempo…) e na final nacional eu ja imaginava que teria problemas… sempre achei que nao iam escolher um Brasileiro pra representar a Inglaterra em um concurso de DJs… Com tanto DJ muito bom aqui… seria como um ingles representar o Brasil em um concurso de futebol…
